Types of Hot Melt Glue

Metallocene Hot Melt Glues

LD Davis offers a full line of metallocene hot melt glues that can eliminate many common glue issues such as charring, stringing, strong odor and problems with plugged nozzles and filters. Through their lower density and aggressive bond potential, metallocene formulas can significantly reduce the amount of glue you use per box and your total hot melt glue costs.

Fugitive Hot Melt Glues

Fugitive glue is commonly known as credit card glue or “booger glue.” The thin strip of gummy-like glue attached to new gift cards and credit cards is fugitive glue—a formula that is easily peeled off the surface it bonds with. Although fugitive glues form a very strong bond, because that bond is easily broken and cannot be resealed, these glues are designed for one-time use.

PUR Hot Melt Glues

Polyurethane reactive hot melt glues are often used for perfect binding and are very different from EVA and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) hot melts. PUR hot melt glues polymerize when applied to form a much stronger bond than traditional hot melts and require less product to create a solid bond. PUR glues are an excellent choice for bonding difficult substrates and obtaining immediate tack, especially in bookbinding applications where traditional animal glues will not work. They also possess superior flexibility and can withstand a larger range of temperatures. Unlike traditional hot melt glues, PUR glues must be left to cure for 24 hours, and because PUR glue bonds occur when the chemicals in the glue draw moisture out of the air, they require a specific equipment setup so the glue does come into contact with air during application.
